I created this website in 2010 while on maternity leave after my second child was born. He was such an easy baby and my daughter was still in daycare part-time. That left me with a lot of time to think about the things that Mother's always think about: the health of my children. And I couldn't help but wonder if my little boy, with his pudgy hands and easy disposition, was somehow benefiting from the natural diet I started when I got pregnant with him. And my daughter, though always petite and active, seemed to show a better attitude after being weaned off of her cereal and crackers diet to a more well-balanced approach. Now I'm a scientist by training and I know such thoughts are merely speculative, but regardless out of those considerations this website was born.
I earned my Master of Science in Physiology from the University of Arizona in 2007. Since that time I have continued on as a Researcher. During these last few years I have studied how obesity affects many systems, and in particular the development of diabetes. In that time I learned that the increased prevalence of this disease has increased alongside our poor diets and lack of physical activity.
I believe that all parents want their kids to eat a healthy, balanced diet. But often we don't know what's a good choice, or we don't have the time to spend hours in the kitchen. In the meantime our children are suffering the detrimental effects of eating a diet high in fats, sugar, salts and processed ingredients. Currently kids eating habits are tipping the delicate balance our bodies need into negative terrain, essentially area that is unsustainable to their bodies.
I also teach Biology at the local Community College where I have numerous students balancing work, school and children all in the name of a higher paying job so that they can do better for their kids. These students are trying to do right by their kids for economic reasons. I believe that all of us, no matter where we are in our lives, can do better by our kids. So let's start with helping them stay healthy by giving them a nutritious and delicious diet. It's basic and yet as necessary for their futures as your paycheck.
The best way to avoid developing the host of debilitating diseases associated with obesity is to prevent it. And the best combat to obesity is to keep it from developing by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Yet we all know from experience that is not something we can change in ourselves overnight; it takes years of discipline and education. But if you start early with your children, you get their foot in the door for lifelong health. You can give them the gift of longevity without the pain of preventable illnesses associated with obesity. And trust me, not only will they be healthy, they'll also be happy.
